Throughout its history, UC Irvine has spun off 46 known companies. Of these, 34 are active, 4 are in development, 7 are inactive and 1 has been acquired. The 34 active companies occupy over 220,000 square feet and employee 432 people. Over 400 of these people work in California and 369 of them are in Orange County.
All of this has been accomplished through an ad hoc series of spin-offs that were created on a case-by-case basis. The goal of the OCBIN incubation program is to create a programmatic methodology that will enable us to duplicate in 2 years the results that have been accumulated over the last 20 years.
